It is less appealing if silence is essential, if you routinely camp where punctures are difficult to avoid, or if you prefer the simplicity of foam. A closed-cell pad can be folded, used as a sit pad, and abused without much consequence. It is also a dependable backup under an air pad on very cold ground. Budget matters, although I would judge this purchase over years rather than one season.
